Federal Protected Classes

Under the Fair Housing Act (Title VIII of the Civil Rights Act of 1968, as amended), it is unlawful to discriminate in the sale, rental, or financing of housing based on:

2. Color
3. National origin
4. Religion
5. Sex (including gender identity and sexual orientation)
6. Familial status (families with children under 18)
7. Disability (physical or mental)

Washington State Additional Protected Classes

The Washington Law Against Discrimination (RCW 49.60) provides additional protections. In Washington State, it is also unlawful to discriminate in housing based on:

1. Marital status
2. Sexual orientation
3. Gender identity or expression
4. Veteran or military status
5. Creed
6. Use of a trained guide dog or service animal by a person with a disability
7. HIV/AIDS or Hepatitis C status
